On September 23, 2024, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced the resumption of flights by Condor, a prominent German leisure airline, to Thailand. This revival includes four weekly flights from Frankfurt to Bangkok and three from Frankfurt to Phuket, marking a significant development in the country’s efforts to rejuvenate its tourism sector. The resumption of flights is anticipated to enhance inbound travel from Germany, with projections estimating approximately 979,000 German tourists will visit Thailand in 2024, contributing around 65 billion Baht to the local economy, effectively aligning with pre-pandemic tourism levels.

The TAT Governor, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, expressed her optimism regarding this resumption, viewing Condor’s new flight routes as a promising indicator for the recovery of Thai tourism. The inaugural Frankfurt-Bangkok flight (DE2362) was ceremoniously welcomed at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, showcasing traditional Thai hospitality, with attendance from key tourism leaders and executives. Similarly, the inaugural flight to Phuket (DE2368) was also greeted with celebration at Phuket International Airport, further underscoring the significance of these routes in enhancing the destination’s appeal to German travelers.

Condor’s operational strategy involves deploying an Airbus A330neo aircraft for its services to Thailand, offering a variety of seating options, including Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes. This effort complements the existing flight services provided by Thai Airways and Lufthansa, reflecting a collaborative aim to attract German tourists. The TAT’s report highlights a notable 22% increase in forward bookings from Germany for the period of October to December 2024 compared to the previous year, suggesting healthy demand and interest among German travelers in visiting Thailand. Overall, the revival of Condor’s flights symbolizes a strategic leap toward reinvigorating tourism ties with Germany.
