Rice Squeeze Hits Asia after India export ban

Share

India’s decision to ban rice exports has caused a 10% increase in prices, the highest in 15 years. Climate-related factors such as floods, droughts, and severe weather have led to a major shortage in rice production, putting food security and livelihoods at risk. Rice cultivation is highly vulnerable to droughts caused by climate change. The El Nino weather pattern and extreme weather events are also affecting rice supply. This, along with increasing demand and limited investment in rice production, could lead to high prices in the future. Thailand, the world’s second-largest rice exporter, has been particularly affected, with domestic prices increasing by almost 20%.
